Scarcity is the stake. Short prints, inserts, two-sided cards and one of ones — there is exactly one of some of these, forever, and the only way to get one is to trade somebody for it.

Draft night to draft night. One Season Pass, bought by the commissioner, covers the league. Nothing else is ever for sale.
Most commissioners fold it into dues — it is $12 on top of whatever a head already pays. One person buys the pass for the league; we do not bill twelve people, and there is nothing for a manager to pay for, ever.
